Tennessee Programs Increase Participation and Benefits with Recovery Act Funds

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner James Neeley announced today the availability of training funds to dislocated workers and low-income adults in Tennessee. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides a one-time appropriation to Tennessee of $21.2 million for dislocated workers and $9.2 million to low-income adults to pay for training and support services.  
 
“The training, particularly in emerging occupations, that will be provided with these Recovery Act funds will help prepare unemployed Tennesseans for new jobs at a time when that’s more important than ever,” said Bredesen.

ARRA Helps Disadvantaged Youth Obtain Summer Jobs

Recovery Act Provides $25 Million to Create Thousands of Jobs

NASHVILLE– Eligible youth are already signing up for the Summer Youth Jobs Program in Tennessee. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is providing $25 million to help provide 12,000 jobs for disadvantaged youth. Summer work will begin in June and end in September for most participants.
 
“The money provided by the ARRA is helping re-instate a valuable program that will help train, educate and enrich our youth,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “We want the participants in this program to walk away with actual workplace experience that will help to better their future.”

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen joined Congressman John Tanner, TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely, State Senator Lowe Finney, State Representative Curtis Halford and officials from Gibson County today to break ground on Tennessee’s first transportation project funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. The Gibson County project will replace three aging timber bridges along McMurry Road in Trenton.
 
“The McMurry Road bridges have served the citizens of Gibson County well for more than 37 years, but are clearly in need of replacement,” said Bredesen. “This project will save the county government close to $200,000 in matching funds, will employ more than 150 Tennessee workers and, most importantly, will give the residents of Gibson County peace of mind as they travel this roadway.”

NASHVILLE— Governor Phil Bredesen today released a final list of projects to be funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds (Recovery Act), proposed bridge bonds and TDOT’s regular funding mechanisms. The three-tiered program represents more than 450 projects statewide touching every county in Tennessee. Included in the proposal, which has been presented to the Legislature, are 132 highway and bridge projects in TDOT’s Region One alone.

Recovery Act Helps Tennessee Students Most At Risk

NASHVILLE– Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner of Education Dr. Timothy Webb today announced Title I funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). These allocations represent the entire Title I funding that will be available for districts to improve teaching and learning for students most at risk of failing to meet state and academic achievement standards.

Recovery Act Assists Workers 55 and Older

Senior Workers Program Receives $484,100 

NASHVILLE – Unemployed low-income Tennesseans age 55 and older will soon see additional training and employment opportunities as a result of a $484,100 grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The money will be used to expand the existing Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), aimed at helping older workers with poor employment prospects.
