NASHVILLE- Governor Phil Bredesen joined First Lady Andrea Conte and Health Commissioner Susan Cooper for the “March to the Moon” kick-off walk at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park on Monday. “March to the Moon” is part of a new employee wellness initiative between Get Fit Tennessee and the state’s Employee Wellness Program designed to encourage state employees to move more in the month of March.

German-based Polysilicon Manufacturer Becomes Tennessee’s Third  $1 Billion Project in Eight Months

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen today joined Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber, Dr. Rudolph Staudigl, president and CEO of Wacker Chemie AG of Munich, Germany and Dr. Ingomar Kovar, president of Wacker Chemical Corporation, Adrian, Mich., in announcing the company’s plans to build a $1 billion facility for the manufacture of hyperpure polycrystalline silicon in Bradley County, Tenn. Polycrystalline silicon is a primary component used in the manufacture of solar panels and semiconductors and the project is expected to create more than 500 new jobs for the region.
 
“This announcement further enhances Tennessee’s growing reputation as an innovation center in the development and manufacture of clean energy technologies,” said Bredesen. “I appreciate Wacker Chemie’s investment in Tennessee and its recognition of the productivity of Tennessee workers, and I’m very pleased the company believes this is the best place to enhance its position in this growing economic sector.”

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen today appointed 36 Tennesseans to serve on 12 boards and commissions, including one reappointment to the Tennessee Claims Commission.

Bredesen Announces Federal Farm Assistance Granted for Giles and Macon Counties

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Giles and Macon counties as natural disaster areas for agriculture due to drought conditions in 2008.

“Many farmers were hit hard by extreme weather conditions this past season and are having an especially difficult time in this economy,” said Bredesen. “I appreciate Secretary Vilsack’s approval of my request and hope this will help producers in these areas recover some of their losses and to better manage through the next few months.”

Bredesen Announces Seven West Counties Approved for Federal Disaster Assistance

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the federal government has approved his request for disaster assistance for seven counties in West Tennessee for damage from a winter storm that struck on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Bredesen requested the federal disaster aid for Dyer, Henry, Lake, Obion, Montgomery, Stewart and Weakley counties on Feb. 6.

Local governments and public utilities in the seven approved counties are now eligible for Public Assistance Program funds from the federal government. The public assistance designation also covers emergency response and recovery costs incurred by state government.

Bredesen Files Fiscal Management Legislation

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen this week submitted legislation that provides fiscal management tools that will give the state more flexibility to manage through the recession created by an extraordinary national economic crisis.

“This legislation has been very carefully crafted to give the state specific tools to manage through this recession in a way that helps minimize the number of potential employee layoffs and frees up state dollars to help us deal with the state budget,” Bredesen said. “I urge the members of the House and Senate to move quickly to approve these measures.”

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today delivered his seventh State of the State Address to the members of the 106th General Assembly, outlining a path forward that will ensure Tennessee’s financial position remains sound while focusing on the basics: improving education, job creation and health care.
 
The Governor acknowledged the overwhelming issue right now is the state of the national economy – the worst since World War II – and its impact on the people and the government of Tennessee.
 
“We can’t fix the national economy, but we can do everything in our power to support the people of our state through these times, and we can keep our eyes on the basics and make sure we are positioned in the best possible way when the economy improves again,” Bredesen said.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen today requested the Federal Emergency Management Agency perform damage assessments in four counties to begin the federal disaster declaration process. The four West Tennessee counties impacted by winter storms that moved through the state earlier this week include Dyer, Lake, Obion and Weakly Counties.
