Portion of Emory River Closed Aug. 11-Sept. 10 Near Kingston Steam Plant

NASHVILLE --- A portion of the Emory River near the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston Steam Plant will be closed as cleanup efforts continue from the massive release of coal ash from the steam plant on Dec. 22, 2008.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has received notification that the Environmental Protection Agency has made an announcement to close a section of the river from mile marker 1.5 to mile marker 3 as heavy equipment is used to remove the ash. This closure is effective beginning 5 a.m. on Aug. 11 through 5 a.m. on Sept. 10. 

Darren Rider Named TWRA Boating Division Chief

NASHVILLE --- Darren Rider has been named as Chief of the Boating Division for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. He had been serving as the acting chief since March when former chief Ed Carter became the executive director of the agency.

As the Boating Division Chief, he is responsible for the coordination of statewide boating registration, education, accident investigations and enforcement programs for the agency. He also serves as liaison between the State of Tennessee and the U.S. Coast Guard and is designated as the State Boating Law Administrator.

TWRA Fisheries Division Preparing for AFS Annual Meeting in Nashville

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Fisheries Division, along with other TWRA personnel, are in preparation for the American Fisheries Society annual meeting which will be held in Nashville on Aug. 30-Sept. 3.

The Nashville event will be the 139th annual meeting which has been held every year since 1870. The meeting was twice held in Memphis (1955 and ‘61), but this will be its first time in Nashville. The meeting will take place be held at the Renaissance Hotel and Nashville Convention Center.
 
“We are looking forward to having the AFS meeting coming to Nashville and returning to our state,” said Bobby Wilson, TWRA Assistant Fisheries Chief and general meeting chair for the event. “A lot of people have been working very hard in advance for the meeting.”
 
AFS is the world's oldest and largest organization dedicated to strengthening the fisheries profession, advancing fisheries science, and conserving fisheries resources.

Franklin Resident Awarded Final Spot in Elk Hunt

NASHVILLE --- The final permit for participation in Tennessee’s first-ever managed elk hunt has been awarded to Franklin resident Andy Miller. Miller was the high bidder in an auction that benefits the state’s elk restoration program.

Miller joins four other Tennessee residents who had their names selected in a computer drawing from almost 13,000 entries for the hunt scheduled Oct. 19-23 at the North Cumberland Wildlife Area. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) donated a permit for the fifth participant to a Non-Governmental Organization.

Holston AAP Announces 2009 Deer Hunts

 

MORRISTOWN --- Holston Army Ammunition Plant (HSAAP) is now accepting applications for five white-tailed deer hunts to be held on the installation during the upcoming 2009 hunting season. Hunters who apply for the 2009 HSAAP hunts should be aware that there have been several changes made to the installation’s hunting program in the past two years.
 
One significant change is that all hunters who hunt on the plant, regardless of their age, are required to show proof of completion of a hunter safety course before being allowed to hunt. In addition, all hunters who are selected for one of the installation’s hunts will be required to obtain a background check from their local police department and provide a copy of their background check with their application. 

TWRA, University of Memphis to Conduct Study on State's Rabbits and Squirrels

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, along with the University of Memphis, will be conducting a study on the distribution of rabbit and squirrel species in Tennessee in the upcoming hunting season.
