TWRA Announces Availability of Riparian Tree Planting Grants for Fiscal Year 2010

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency announces the availability of grant dollars to assist cities, schools, community organizations, civic groups, watershed organizations, and conservation groups, etc., with riparian tree planting projects.

Leftover Special Season Anterless Deer and Fall Turkey Permits Available Sept. 16

NASHVILLE --- Leftover special season antlerless deer and fall turkey permits will be available on Wednesday, Sept. 16 beginning at 8 a.m. (CDT). Leftover permits will be through the Online License Center and through all Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency license agents.

AEDC WMA Units 1 & 2 Permits to Be Allocated for October Hunts

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has announced the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Wildlife Management Area units 1 & 2 permits are going to be allocated for a shotgun deer hunt on Oct. 17-18, 2009 using a first come, first serve basis. The permits will go on sale at 8 a.m. (CDT) on Sept. 15.

Two-Boating-Related Fatalities Reported over Labor Day Weekend

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reports that there were two boating-related fatalities over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The fatal accidents both came on Saturday in separate incidents on Watts Barr Lake and Normandy Lake.

Sept. 1 Signals Opening of Dove Season in Tennessee

NASHVILLE --- As the calendar turns to September, one of Tennessee’s most long-standing outdoor traditions will begin with the opening of mourning dove season. Dove season officially begins across the state on Sept. 1 at noon (local time).

Tennessee’s 2009 season will again be divided into three segments: Sept. 1 through Sept. 26; Oct. 10 through Oct. 25; and Dec. 19 through Jan. 15. Hunting times, other than the noon start on opening day, are one-half hour before sunrise until sunset for all other days.

American Fisheries Society Set for First Meeting in State Since 1961

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be among those welcoming the annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society to Nashville, marking the organization’s first meeting in Tennessee since 1961.

The Nashville event is Aug. 30-Sept. 3 and has been held every year since 1870 and will be the 139th annual meeting. The meeting was twice held in Memphis (1955 and ‘61), but this will be its first time in Nashville. TWRA and the Tennessee Chapter of the AFS are hosting the event.
 
More than 1,500 fisheries scientists from around the world are expected for the event to be held at the Renaissance Hotel and Nashville Convention Center. The meeting will include 32 organized symposia, more than 800 oral presentations, and over 130 poster presentations. This year’s meeting theme is “Diversity—the Foundation of Fisheries and of AFS: Are We Gaining Ground?
 
“Our return to the state of Tennessee is long overdue,” said AFS President Bill Franzin. “This heartland state embodies our theme perfectly, from its rich aquatic biological diversity to the diversity of fisheries management issues that can be found here. It will be the perfect setting for international exchange on the latest advances in fisheries science and management from experts from over 70 countries.”
