TDOT Suspends Lane Closures & Launches New Motorist Information Tool for Memorial Day

NASHVILLE –Motorists traveling through the volunteer state this Memorial Day holiday will have an open road and a new tool to help avoid traffic tie-ups. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is suspending all lane closure activities on state roads and interstates and is launching TDOT’s first Twitter page to help keep motorists up to date about problems on volunteer state roadways. 
 
“In addition to suspending all lane closure activity this Memorial Day we will be launching our latest informational tool for motorists,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “Twitter is one more way TDOT can help travelers stay informed about road conditions in the volunteer state.”

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that $263,220 in Aeronautics Grants have been approved for seven Tennessee airports.
 
"Our local airports are vital to the economy and travel system of Tennessee," said Bredesen. "Investing in our airports helps keep them competitive and efficient at meeting the needs of businesses and travelers. I'm pleased to support their continued improvement."

Interstate to Re-open to Traffic 18 Days Ahead of Schedule

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.— One of the most anticipated dates in recent Knoxville history is now official; I-40 in Downtown Knoxville will re-open to traffic on June 12, 2009. Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely credited a “great team working on a model project,” at a press conference today announcing the I-40 re-opening date for the SmartFIX40 project.

“Given the magnitude of this project, its completion is a major milestone for TDOT, the city of Knoxville and the thousands of individuals involved who have made SmartFIX40 one of the most successful projects in history,” said Nicely.

TDOT Opens Bids for 119 Recovery Act Funded Projects

Projects will Employ Thousands of Tennessee Workers
 
NASHVILLE – The bids are in and today the Tennessee Department of Transportation identified the apparent lowest bidders on the state’s second round of infrastructure projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. At 10:00 a.m. CDT, TDOT officials opened bids from contractors across the state vying to construct 119 projects in 64 Tennessee counties to be funded through the Recovery Act. Bids were immediately posted on the TDOT web site under Information for Contractors, Bid Lettings, May 8.

Two Knoxville Students Place in National Aviation Art Contest 
 
NASHVILLE — Governor Phil Bredesen congratulated two Knoxville, Tennessee elementary students at the State Capitol Thursday for placing first and second in their age group in a national aviation arts contest.  The Governor recognized 4th grader Zeth Akins for placing second in the International Aviation Arts Contest. Student Chihye Kim was recognized for winning her age bracket in the National competition. Both children are students in Ms. Jeanne Hardin’s class at Cedar Bluff Elementary School. 
 

New Program Encourages Tennesseans to Take Steps to Reduce Air Pollution

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation today announced “Clear the Air Tennessee,” a new educational program designed to encourage Tennesseans to take action against poor air quality by changing their transportation habits. The program is funded through the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program and targets citizens in counties designated by the E.P.A. as air quality nonattainment or maintenance areas.
