NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is proud to announce that the “StopLitter™ – Tennessee’s Had Enough” litter prevention campaign has earned a 2009 Exemplary Human Environment Initiative Award from the U.S. Department of Transportation.  The award recognizes outstanding examples of transportation projects that either create or improve conditions for human activities while protecting the natural environment.

 

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is once again halting all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways for the busy Labor Day holiday travel period.  While AAA reports travel numbers are expected to be lower than last year, nearly a half million Tennesseans are still expected to travel by car this holiday.
 

Construction crews will stop all lane closure activity beginning at noon on Friday, September 4 through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8. This will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists traveling during the busy Labor Day holiday.
 

NASHVILLE –The Tennessee Department of Transportation Governor’s Highway Safety Office today announced the winners of the 5th Annual Law Enforcement Challenge.  The Law Enforcement Challenge is presented to law enforcement agencies across the state by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. It recognizes outstanding performances by law enforcement agencies and officers from across the state.

 

 

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen and Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely today announced $17 million in transportation enhancement grants for projects in 39 Tennessee communities and one statewide grant. The grants will assist local communities with the development of a variety of projects designed to enhance the state’s transportation infrastructure. 

 

“The Enhancement Grant Program provides an opportunity for the state to work with local agencies to fund projects that enrich Tennessee communities in a variety of ways,” said Bredesen. “Many will use these funds to build new sidewalks and bike trails that support healthier lifestyles, while others utilize the program to save historic structures for future generations. All of these are worthwhile projects that truly enhance the quality of life in local communities.”

 

 

NASHVILLE – State government employees who work in the Memphis area will now be able to ride public transit to and from work at no cost under a new agreement reached between the Memphis Area Transit Authority and the Tennessee Department of Transportation. State employees will be able to start signing up for the program on September 1, 2009.

NASHVILLE – Construction is now underway on a project to widen US-70S (SR-1, Nashville Hwy.) in Warren County. The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Tennessee Department of Transportation Chief Engineer Paul Degges joined Congressman Lincoln Davis and state and local officials in Warren County today to break ground on the project which will widen US-70S to four lanes between Spring Valley Road and Centertown.
