Preliminary Figures Show Decline in Fatal Crashes

 
NASHVILLE --- Preliminary figures from the Tennessee Department of Safety show eight people were killed in traffic crashes on Tennessee roadways during the 78-hour July 4th holiday period. This is a drop from the 11 fatalities that occurred during the 2008 July 4th holiday weekend.

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol announced today that state troopers will be out in full force during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, cracking down on drunk drivers with an aggressive Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest enforcement blitz.   To make sure motorist are obeying the law, the Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety and driver license checkpoints across the state in an effort to reduce fatalities and serious injury crashes in Tennessee.

NASHVILLE --- On July 1, the Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) will begin issuing driver licenses with the date of birth in larger red type designed to make it easier for retailers to read.

“We are pleased to announce that the type size of the date of birth on the Tennessee driver license has been enlarged to comply with the ‘Gus Kampas Act’, which was adopted by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Bredesen in 2008,” stated Department of Safety Deputy Commissioner Greta Dajani.

Bredesen Announces Allocation of $16.7 Million to Tennessee's 11 Homeland Security Districts

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee will distribute $16.7 million in federal homeland security grant funds to the state’s 11 Homeland Security Districts, Governor Phil Bredesen and Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell announced today. Local authorities will use the 2009 federal homeland security funds to strengthen the capabilities of first responders to detect, deter, prepare and respond to acts of terror and other disasters.

TDOS Terminates Third-party Agreement with Volunteer Training Center

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) notified Volunteer Training Center, located at 819 Park Avenue in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, that the third-party agreement to administer commercial driver license (CDL) skills tests on behalf of the department has been terminated. The termination is effective, June 21, 2009.

Bredesen Announces More Than $20 Million in Homeland Security Grants

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) is opening a new Driver Service Center in McMinnville, Tennessee, and closing the one currently located at 1350 Sparta Street.  The new facility will be located at 594 Vervilla Road in McMinnville.

THP Searches for Hit and Run Vehicle after Striking Pedestrian

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol is seeking the public’s help in locating a vehicle and driver with possible connection to a hit and run crash that seriously injured a female pedestrian on Tuesday, June 2, 2009.
