October 2008 County Unemployment Rates

Rates Decrease in 53 Counties

NASHVILLE – Tennessee's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for October 2008 was released last week at 7.0 percent, 0.2 percentage point lower than the September rate of 7.2 percent. The United States unemployment rate for the month of October was 6.5 percent.

Second Extension of Unemployment Benefits Approved

26,000 Tennesseans Estimated to Qualify

NASHVILLE – An estimated 26,000 Tennesseans will qualify for another round of extended unemployment benefits under federal legislation signed by President Bush, with hundreds more becoming eligible each day. Unemployed Tennesseans can collect up to 26 weeks of unemployment normally. In June, Congress approved the first 13 week extension due to the downturn in the economy. The second extension was signed November 21 by the President.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for October was 7.0 percent, down 0.2 percentage point from the September rate of 7.2. The October rate a year ago was 5.0 percent. The national unemployment rate for October 2008 was 6.5 percent, up from the September rate of 6.1.

NASHVILLE— In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, First Lady Andrea Conte joined officials from across state government today to pay tribute to Tennessee’s state workers who have survived breast cancer.
 
Commissioners and designees from 33 state departments honored 89 state employees at the event today at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville. Neil Orne with WKRN-TV emceed the event. Vicki Yates with News Channel 5 and Jennifer Johnson with WSMV-TV were on hand to read the names of the honorees as they accepted a pink rose and certificate from the First Lady and the commissioner or representative from their state department.

NASHVILLE –The Putnam County Workforce Employer Outreach Committee (WEOC) is hosting an employer forum on Tuesday, November 18, at noon, at the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce located at One, West First Street, Cookeville. Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley will be the keynote speaker at the event. He will be speaking on issues that impact the department of labor, workers’ compensation, workforce development and Tennessee’s state budget.

NASHVILLE – Carbon monoxide poisoning is a major source of injury and accidental death both in and outside of the workplace. In 2007, five people were hospitalized in a single exposure. In 2005, two people died from carbon monoxide exposure by running propane buffers, both of which occurred in the workplace.
