Rabid Puppy Identified in Rutherford County

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed a case of rabies in a puppy in Rutherford County. TDOH is conducting an investigation to identify any persons who may have been exposed to rabies through contact with the puppy.

NASHVILLE — Governor Phil Bredesen today recognized ten programs and organizations from across the state for their efforts in the promotion of healthy lifestyles. These organizations have been honored by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health as the 2009 Shining Star Award recipients.

“I applaud the efforts of these organizations in improving the health and fitness of Tennessee citizens,” said Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. “The work of these groups and the individuals they inspire helps Tennessee become a healthier state and puts us on track to live longer lives.”

National HIV Testing Day: Promoting Public Awareness and Prevention

Free and Confidential Testing for TN Residents 

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Health will join health providers and advocates across the country in observing National HIV Testing Day on Saturday, June 27. The goal of this observance is to promote public awareness and prevention of HIV, and the Tennessee Department of Health is encouraging all sexually active Tennesseans to get tested for HIV. TDOH provides free, confidential testing across the state in local county health departments.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner Susan R. Cooper, MSN, RN, has suspended new admissions of residents to Life Care Center of Red Bank nursing home effective June 17, 2009, and imposed a one-time state civil monetary penalty of $5,000. A federal civil penalty has been imposed at $6,150 a day until the violations are corrected. A special monitor has been appointed to review the facility’s operations.

A flu pandemic is a global disease outbreak of a new influenza virus, for which people have little or no immunity and for which there is no vaccine. The disease spreads easily person-to-person, causes serious illness and can sweep across the country and around the world in very short time.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Health announces that the suspension of admissions at Community Care of Rutherford County has been lifted effective June 1, 2009. The facility is a 131-bed licensed nursing home located at 901 East County Farm Road in Murfreesboro.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Health announces that the suspension of admissions at Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center has been lifted. The facility is a 120-bed licensed nursing home located at 415 Cole Drive in Pigeon Forge.

NASHVILLE — First Lady Andrea Conte and Department of Health Deputy Commissioner Jim Shulman have announced results of the first-ever March to the Moon fitness challenge for state employees. The top five placing state departments and agencies were honored in late April with a presentation at Ellington Agricultural Center.

"We are delighted with the March to the Moon event and the number of state employees who embraced this opportunity to be more active," said First Lady Conte. "We hope this event inspires state workers to continue their personal journey to better health throughout this year and their lifetimes.”
