NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Education Commissioner Timothy Webb today announced new grants to institutions of higher education to provide research-based professional development to K-12 teachers of math and science. These Math and Science Partnership grants create a three-year relationship between a university and area school systems to enhance teaching of these critical subject areas.

NASHVILLE – Forty-six Tennessee teachers have recently earned National Board Certification, a stringent, voluntary certification process administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. With a more than 20 percent increase in the number of teachers who achieved certification over last year, to date 338 Tennessee teachers have met the National Board Certification requirements which can take between one and three years to complete.
NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education is proud to announce the launch of its electronic learning center to give students, parents and educators access to learning and professional development resources anytime, anywhere. Through a collaboration with Apple, Inc. and the Tennessee Board of Regents, the ELC has a dedicated site on iTunes U, an area of the iTunes Store that provides free education content. The ELC, at www.TNelc.org, is designed to enhance achievement by providing access to more than 280 curriculum-based audio and video tracks developed by the Tennessee Department of Education.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education today released its annual comprehensive report card on pre-K - 12 education including state, district and school-level information on achievement, demographics, discipline and educator preparation. State-level results show Tennessee met federal achievement benchmarks in all but one category, improved achievement in reading/language arts at the elementary level and increased the state’s graduation rate to 82.2 percent.
