NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely joined representatives from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, Department of Safety, Department of Health, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, AARP, AAA Auto Club South, and a number of other highway safety partners to sign a new Strategic Highway Safety Plan for Tennessee on Wednesday, September 30. The goal of the new plan is to reduce the number of fatalities in Tennessee by 10% by 2012.

NASHVILLE – This October, the Department of Health is urging all Tennessee women over the age of 40 to get a clinical breast exam and mammogram as part of the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These tests are the best method for finding cancer early and offering protection against the disease by leading women to get treatment before the cancer is in advanced stages. The survival rate is greater than 95 percent for women whose breast cancer is found at an early stage.

Alcohol and Drug Crisis Services Open in East and West Tennessee

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities announces the opening of four medically-monitored crisis detoxification units in East and West Tennessee. The units are operating out of community mental health and alcohol and drug agencies in Chattanooga, Jackson, Knoxville and Memphis. A fifth unit will open later this year in Nashville to serve Middle Tennessee.

TennCare Completes Statewide Medical and Behavioral Health Integration

NASHVILLE — The Bureau of TennCare announced today that BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST) will take over behavioral health care for enrollees receiving services through TennCare Select. This transition to using a single managed care entity to provide all of the care an enrollee needs, including physical and behavioral health coverage, marks TennCare’s completion of the shift to a fully-integrated service delivery model.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Agriculture recently awarded more than $252,000 in Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program forestry grants. The grants will assist cities and towns in maintaining and increasing their tree resource.

“Anyone who has tried to help someone find or apply for social service programs knows how challenging the process can be,” Governor Bredesen said. “FindHelpTN provides case workers, advocates, clergy or family members and individuals themselves with access to a single source of information to identify programs for which someone may qualify.”

NASHVILLE – Participants enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, are preparing for an exciting change. The food packages are changing effective October 1, 2009 to better meet the nutritional needs of WIC families. New foods will include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, soy products and baby foods.
