NASHVILLE − The Department of Health urges Tennessee smokers to take part in this year’s Great American Smokeout on November 19, 2009. The goal of this annual health observance is to encourage smokers to quit for one day in the hope they may quit for good. In Tennessee, tobacco users can call the Tennessee Tobacco QuitLine free of charge at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669 to set a plan for how to quit.

The Highlands of Dyersburg Health & Rehab Admissions Suspension Lifted

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Health announces that the suspension of admissions at the Highlands of Dyersburg Health & Rehabilitation has been lifted effective November 5, 2009. The facility is a 123-bed licensed nursing home located at 350 East Tickle Road.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen Tuesday joined officials from the Departments of Human Resources, Military and Veterans Affairs and members of the Tennessee Army and Air National Guard to honor Tennessee’s veterans working in state government.   The observance paid special tribute to the veterans who have served in every conflict since the nation’s founding, as well as the service of soldiers currently serving at home and abroad.
 
Governor Bredesen spoke about the sacrifices of fellow Tennesseans and the strain it puts upon their loved ones a home.

October Revenues

NASHVILLE – For the third consecutive month in the fiscal year that began July 1, state tax collections fell below budgeted estimates.  Finance & Administration Commissioner Dave Goetz today announced that state revenue collections for October were $698.2 million, which is 1.53% below October 2008 collections.  October collections reflect consumer spending in September.

NASHVILLE- Governor Phil Bredesen attended the Music City Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony Sunday to present friend and music legend Dolly Parton with her star which will be placed on Nashville’s Music Mile. Dolly Parton shared the honors with Charlie Daniels and Kid Rock, as well as the late Ernest Tubb and Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge founder Hattie Louise “Tootsie” Bess.

Tennessee Names 2010 Teacher of Year

NASHVILLE – McNairy County elementary school teacher Patty Kiddy was named Tennessee Teacher of the Year Thursday night during the Annual Teacher of the Year banquet. Barbara Hillis and Resa Byrd are the grand division winners from Middle and East Tennessee respectively.

“Teachers are the foundation for every student’s success,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said. “It’s a challenging profession and a job that requires great commitment. I want to congratulate Ms. Kiddy, Ms. Hillis and Ms. Byrd on being the best of what our profession has to offer.”
