KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –The Tennessee Department of Transportation has completed emergency repairs on I-40 and has already opened one lane westbound near the Gallaher View Road Exit. The far left lane was opened by 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday evening.
Shortly after noon, a Knoxville Utilities Board contractor working to install a gas line under the interstate inadvertently caused the asphalt in the left lane of I-40 westbound to become elevated creating a road hazard.
Repairs made today are considered to be short term repairs to safely and quickly open all lanes on I-40 for Labor Day travel. KUB is responsible for the long term repairs to the two interstate lanes damaged during the installation of their gas line.
