Tennessee Names 2010 Teacher of Year

NASHVILLE – McNairy County elementary school teacher Patty Kiddy was named Tennessee Teacher of the Year Thursday night during the Annual Teacher of the Year banquet. Barbara Hills and Resa Byrd are the grand division winners from Middle and East Tennessee respectively.

“Teachers are the foundation for every student’s success,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said. “It’s a challenging profession and a job that requires great commitment. I want to congratulate Ms. Kiddy, Ms. Hills and Ms. Byrd on being the best of what our profession has to offer.”

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Governor Phil Bredesen announced today the launch of Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways with the debut of the Old Tennessee Trail. Rascal Flatts will be lending their voices and support to the project as part of the marketing campaign.
 
Led by the Department of Tourist Development, Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways is a statewide initiative encompassing all 95 counties along 15 regional trails, and featuring Tennessee’s five National Scenic Byways. The Old Tennessee Trail will highlight more than 70 significant tourism sites, promoting Davidson, Williamson and Maury Counties.

NASHVILLE– The editors of Site Selection magazine, one of the nation’s premier economic development publications, have ranked Tennessee among the five best states in the U.S. for best business climates. The announcement marks the seventh time in the past decade Tennessee has been listed among the top ten states for business climate. The state has been ranked among the top five states in five of the past seven years. The closely watched annual rankings appear in the November 2009 issue.

Tennessee Department of Education Releases 2009 Report Card

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education today released the annual comprehensive report card on pre-K – 12 education, including state, district and school-level information on achievement, demographics, and discipline. This year’s report card demonstrates fundamental changes to the calculations of Value Added and Achievement scores. The method of calculating scores and the scale used to determine letter grades have been revised to allow for a transition to the new standards and assessments required by the Tennessee Diploma Project.
