This year’s theme, “The 360 Approach: Educating the Whole Child,” addresses the critical need of ensuring that our students are both college- and career-ready.

 SL Tennessee, LLC to Invest $35 Million and Create 300 New Jobs in Clinton

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber today joined with executives of SL America to announce a $35 million expansion of SL Tennessee, LLC, a company subsidiary operating in Clinton, Tenn.. The expansion will create 300 new jobs and add an additional 100,000 square feet to the company’s existing facility by the end of 2010. SL Tennessee is an automotive parts supplier for General Motors, Hyundai, KMG and Volkswagen.

NASHVILLE - The 6th Annual Reelfoot Lake Eagle Festival is set for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 5-7.  This annual winter pilgrimage of the majestic American Bald Eagle will bring these winged creatures back to northwest Tennessee from their summer homes in the upper Great Lakes and Canada. With wingspans of six to eight feet and weights up to 16 pounds, the American Bald Eagle has been returning to the open water, marshes and cypress-laden sloughs of Reelfoot Lake for generations.

Recreation Initiative Program Grant Cycle Announced; Workshop Slated for March 3

NASHVILLEThe Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is soliciting Tennessee Recreation Initiative Program grant applications from local governments that do not currently have parks or recreation departments.   TRIP grants help communities create recreation opportunities for citizens by assisting with the establishment of a parks department. Applications are due April 15, 2010, and award recipients will be announced in May.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation, Governor’s Highway Safety Office and Tennessee Department of Safety will join the Tennessee Titans Friday, February 5 to honor Titans fans who pledged to be designated drivers during this year’s football season and to remind all Tennesseans to designate a sober driver if consuming alcohol during this weekend’s Super Bowl. During the 2009 season, more than 6,000 Titans fans promised to refrain from drinking and be the designated driver for friends and family, making the Titans the top team in the AFC-South for designated drivers at home games.  Several of the fans who pledged to be designated drivers will be recognized and will receive an exclusive tour of LP Field. 

TN Proclaims February National Career and Technical Education Month

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education is proud to announce students and faculty in 3,400 career and technical education programs of study in the state will celebrate February as National Career and Technical Education month. The theme of this month’s celebration, “CTE: Invest in Your Future,” highlights the importance of career and technical education in providing the essential skills necessary for future success.

HIV/AIDS Prevention-A Choice and a Lifestyle

NASHVILLE – In Tennessee, while African-Americans comprise approximately 16 percent of the total state population, they make up 64 percent of HIV infection diagnoses. In an effort to draw attention to this crisis among black communities, the Tennessee Department of Health will take part in observances of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on February 7, 2010.
 
The goal of NBHAAD is to increase awareness, participation and support for HIV prevention, care and treatment among African-Americans. This year’s NBHAAD theme is “HIV/AIDS Prevention — A Choice and a Lifestyle!” Across Tennessee, several organizations are planning events as part of this annual health observance.

DHS Announces 2010 Summer Food Program

NASHVILLE ‑ The Tennessee Department of Human Services is looking for non-profit and local government agencies to help feed low-income children this summer. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is designed to provide healthy, nutritious meals to needy children during summer vacation. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides funding for the program, which is specifically designed for children who depend upon school lunch and breakfast programs and whose nutritional needs may be greater when schools are closed.  

Bredesen Requests Federal Farm Assistance for Seven Counties

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen has requested a federal designation of natural disaster for agriculture for seven additional counties in Tennessee as a result of excessive rain and flooding that occurred in September and October.
 
“A disaster designation will help make federal assistance available to farmers who experienced significant crop losses due to heavy rains and flooding this past fall,” said Bredesen. “I’m pleased that USDA has responded to my earlier requests for other counties, and we want to ensure that farmers in these areas are included.”

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen in his State of the State Address Monday announced the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services has received accreditation from the Council on Accreditation, an international, independent, not-for-profit, child- and family-service and behavioral health care accrediting organization.
 
Tennessee’s Department of Children Services is the seventh state-administered agency to receive COA accreditation. State-administered agencies in Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri and West Virginia are currently accredited by the organization.
 
“This is a real achievement for the Department of Children’s Services and speaks to the tremendous progress that’s been made under the leadership of Viola Miller,” said Bredesen. “The people of Tennessee can take both pride and comfort in knowing the people responsible for managing the cases of abused and neglected children have met these high standards.”
