NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen joined TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely, Senator Douglas Henry, Representative Gary Odom, Mayor Karl Dean and other state and local officials in Nashville today to break ground on Phase II of the Interstate 40-White Bridge Road interchange improvement project. The project is being totally funded through money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen recently signed into law legislation extending unemployment benefits with federal funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Tennessee Extended Benefits Program adds a maximum of 20 weeks of benefits for claimants who exhausted their emergency unemployment compensation benefits on or after February 28, 2009.

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol announced today that state troopers will be out in full force during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, cracking down on drunk drivers with an aggressive Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest enforcement blitz.   To make sure motorist are obeying the law, the Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety and driver license checkpoints across the state in an effort to reduce fatalities and serious injury crashes in Tennessee.

The USDA’s school meals programs help ensure all students have access to a nutritious diet.

Tennessee Historical Commission Announces Certificate of Merit Awards

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Historical Commission has announced 21 recipients of its 2009 Certificate of Merit Awards. The awards program, begun by the Commission in 1975, recognizes individuals or groups throughout the state that have worked to conserve or highlight Tennessee’s cultural heritage during the past year. The awards recognize historic preservation projects as well as work in the field of history.

Bredesen Requests Presidential Disaster Declaration for 5 Tennessee Counties

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen has asked President Obama to declare Claiborne, Fayette, Hancock, Haywood and Shelby counties federal disaster areas following severe storms, straight line winds, flooding, hail, and tornadoes that began June 12, 2009 and continued through the next week. Should this initial request for public assistance be granted, the five Tennessee counties would have access to varying levels of federal assistance.

Recovery Act Funds Health Center Capital Improvements

Tennessee Health Centers Receive More Than $16 Million

NASHVILLE – Tennessee will receive $16.7 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for health center facility and equipment needs, which will increase access to health care for thousands of Tennesseans.

The announcement, made this week by First Lady Michelle Obama, detailed the release of a total of $851 million in grants. Two state-run health centers are among the grant recipients. The Upper Cumberland Primary Care Project will receive $1.4 million and Stewart County Community Medical Center was awarded $349,000.

Training To Begin For Recovery Act Weatherization Program

NASHVILLE – The Department of Human Services announced today that training will begin next week to prepare energy auditors and contractors to weatherize thousands of homes across Tennessee, including homes of some families not previously eligible for the program. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will provide up to $99 million for weatherization projects in Tennessee.

Weatherization is the federal energy efficiency program for low- to moderate-income families. The types of weatherization projects allowed under the program may include installation of storm windows and insulation, air and duct sealing, caulking, and other related activities to reduce home energy costs and increase home energy efficiency.

NASHVILLE - The phrase, “I just got nailed by the cops,” is taking on a whole new meaning for Tennesseans. Today, the Governor’s Highway Safety Office joined AAA and the Franklin Police Department to launch “100 Days of Summer Heat” and unveiled a new “Drive Drunk, Get Nailed” message. GHSO has already spread the message to many in Middle Tennessee in a unique and surprising way. Vehicles with 10 foot nails driven through the hoods have appeared in high visibility locations across Middle Tennessee since June 22 in an effort to spread the word.
